Who We Are

Sail Kingston Cove is a non-profit corporation formed in 2015. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors dedicated to assuring the program lives up to it’s mission and goals. Overseeing our operations is our Executive Director who has been with us since 2015. In addition to our volunteer Board members, many parents help us each year with special events and fund raisers. If you are interested in volunteering please contact us. We welcome everyone to join in our mission.

Over those years, we taught more than 1,200 kids how to sail. We receive unwavering support from the Port of Kingston, and the Kingston Cove Yacht Club.

Our Instructors

At all times, Sail Kingston Cove has at a minimum one fully certified instructor on duty during all sailing camps offered by Sail Kingston Cove. We are always open to anyone 16 years or older to join our program, and work towards full certification as an instructor, and be a part of our sailing community. Sail Kingston Cove provides an opportunity for our instructors to qualify for a Level 1 sailing certification, administered by US Sailing. Once completed, these instructors are encouraged to continue with Sail Kingston Cove to their 18th birthday, at which time they will be fully certified as a small boat instructor.

Our Location

Located at the Port of Kingston, Sail Kingston Cove operates off a float provided by the Port of Kingston, adjacent to A dock.

What To Expect

  • Every Camp has certified instructors with the students at all times.
    • Guppy Camps start at 9:00am and end at Noon Monday through Friday.
    • Opti and F] beginner and intermediate camps start at 9:00am or 11:00am and lasts 6 hours Monday through Friday
    • One Opti Intermediate 4 day camp (4th of July week) starts at 11:00am and lasts 6 hours Monday through Thursday.
  • Opti and FJ sailors are required to do a in-water swimming test (with life jacket) covering 50 feet, fully supervised.
  • Safety boats are on the water to help young sallors when needed.
  • A survey form is provided to collect important information as you register for a camp.
  • All registrants are required to sign a waiver of liability and a hold harmless agreement, which can be downloaded during the registration process.
  • Parents, at time of registration, can elect to pay one-third of the Camp fee to hold their reservation, or pay the full fee at the time of registration. Full payment is due within 15 days of Camp start.
  • All fees paid are fully refundable up to 30 days prior to Camp start; additional terms apply.
  • All students will graduate with a special remembrance gift, and full day camp students will receive an ice cream treat (on us).

The Journey

Whether your child is 5 or in their mid-teens, they can begin their sailing adventure with us. All new sailors start with our beginner program, developing fundamental skills and confidence on the water. As they progress to intermediate levels, they'll master more advanced techniques. For those seeking an extra challenge, our specialized racing camp prepares young sailors to join the excitement of local competitions. Guppys Ages 5-7

Our certified instructors introduce ou youngest sailors to the magic of being on the water in small, intimate groups of no more than six children.

In this foundational program, Guppies learn essential water safety skills including proper life jacket use and dock safety. Through fun games and hands-on activities, they'll discover basic sailing concepts, learn simple knots, and build confidence around boats.

Each session includes exciting boat rides and a special beach day, all while ensuring a safe, nurturing environment for these beginning mariners.
Opti's Ages 8-12

Perfect for both new sailors and Guppy graduates, this program launches young sailors into the exciting world of hands-on sailing. In our safe, structured environment, sailors learn to independently handle their own Optimist dinghy - a classic training boat designed specifically for young sailors.

What Your Sailor Will Learn:

  • Essential boat parts and sail theory
  • Proper rigging and launching techniques
  • Fundamental sailing maneuvers (tacking, gybing, figure 8s)
  • Practical safety skills, including capsizing recovery
  • Basic racing concepts for those interested in competition

Ready to Race? For enthusiastic sailors who complete our intermediate level, we offer a specialized racing clinic. Graduates can then join our summer-long program where instructors provide weekly coaching to develop competitive skills.
FJ's Ages 13 and Over

Take your sailing to the next level with our Flying Junior (FJ) program! These two-person dinghies offer the perfect platform for teens to develop teamwork skills while mastering more advanced sailing techniques. Whether you're new to sailing or advancing from our Optimist program, FJs provide an exciting challenge that matches your growing capabilities.
