Kingston High School Kraken Sailing Club
Ages 14 to 18

The Kingston High School Kraken Sailing Club is an exhilarating and dynamic program immersing students in the exciting world of competitive sailing. Focusing on developing sailing skills, fostering teamwork, and instilling a deep appreciation for the sport of sailing, covering both fleet and team racing disciplines.

Objectives:

  1. Sailing Fundamentals: Students will learn the basics of sailing, including rigging, steering, sail trim, and basic navigation. Emphasis will be placed on safety protocols and practices on the water.
  2. Teamwork and Communication: The class will emphasize the importance of effective communication and collaboration among team members. Students will work together to operate the sailboats, making decisions on strategy and tactics during both fleet and team races.
  3. Regatta Preparation: Participants will gain hands-on experience in preparing for regattas, including boat maintenance, equipment checks, and race planning. The program will cover the rules of sailing and strategies for success in both fleet and team racing events.
  4. Physical Fitness: Sailing requires physical endurance, strength, and agility. The class will incorporate fitness routines and exercises tailored to enhance students' overall physical preparedness for both fleet and team racing competitions.
  5. Sportsmanship and Leadership: The course will emphasize the values of sportsmanship, fair play, and leadership. Students will learn to respect competitors, judges, and the environment while fostering a sense of responsibility on and off the water.

Prerequisites:

There are no specific skills prerequisites for this program, though participation in the Sail Kingston Cove FJ courses are recommended. However, students should have a basic level of physical fitness, a willingness to learn, and an interest in outdoor activities in all weather conditions. All students at Kingston High School are welcome to join. High school students from other schools may join the Krakens in groups of 4. Individual students from other schools may not join. The Krakens Sailing Club limits the number of club members based on boat and instructor availability. For more information please see the contacts information below.

Material:

Students are required to bring appropriate clothing for sailing, including PFD, sunscreen, and water-resistant gear. Access to FJ (Flying Junior) sailboats and necessary equipment will be provided by Sail Kingston Cove or in collaboration with other NWISA (North West Interscholastic Sailing Associations) sailing clubs.

Note:

Participation in the Kingston High School Kraken Sailing Team class involves weekend regattas and travel to compete with other NWISA schools. Students and parents should be aware of the commitment required for these events. The course aims to prepare students for both fleet and team racing, offering a comprehensive introduction to the diverse and thrilling world of competitive sailing under the banner of the Kingston Krakens.
